I worked across the series providing specialist photography for sequences from flashlight fish to social amoeba.
The specialist unit was directed by Josh Helliker and together pioneered new techniques for capturing and processing material such as focus stacked timelapses in microscopy.
Pioneering focus-stacking timelapse
To accomplish the Dictyostelium sequence Robert developed focus stacking timelapse to capture the depth needed in each frame of the finished film. Shooting between 50 and 70 depth frames for each frame of each second of finish footage meant a huge data challenge. The solution - a software app was written to handle and process the dats into the timelapse frames; Serenity App has now been used across numerous specialist series including; Frozen Planet 2 (BBC), Green Planet (BBC) and Tiny World (Apple TV+).
