Dr Helen Czerski goes on a spectacular journey to the extremes of the temperature scale, where everyday laws of physics break down and a new world of scientific possibility begins.

I was DOP on the series, shooting across the UK and Iceland in the summer and autumn of 2017. Main camera was the Sony F55 with B Camera the A7s Mk2 on a small gimbal. Additional photography was on timelapse cameras, super slow-motion and drones.

Hot and steamy PTC

Alex and I had the idea of making the final piece to camera of the day for Helen to be one that really made the most of the location in Iceland. True to form, Helen, not aware of what was about to come, went for it and we got it in one.

Slowing things down

I shot the stings for the series on a RED Raven and iX high speed cameras, shooting raw up to 1000 fps in my studio in west London.

See the heat

For visualising the temperature for many of the scenes I opted for a HD FLIR camera and we experimented with a few subjects, including Helen’s badminton class and my local coffee boys Damien and Kris.
